Community Question Corner: How big can my shed be?

The City Council has recently modified the rules regulating accessory building to provide for a sliding scale for setbacks based on the height of the building.

There are also some additional rules for buildings over 600 sq.ft. in size. For buildings under 600 sq. ft. if they are 10 feet or less they can be within 3 feet of the side and rear property lines. Buildings between 10 and 11 feet have to be 6 feet from property lines. This scale goes all the way up to buildings which are up to 25 feet in height being required to be 15 feet from the property lines.

Additionally, structures over 600 sq. ft. must be 60 feet from a neighboring dwelling. One final thing to remember is that any accessory building over 200 sq. ft. is required to obtain a building permit prior to beginning construction to verify compliance with zoning and building codes. Please call 801-782-7211 or swing into the office to get the appropriate paperwork filled out.
